Sonic Youth-Rather Ripped

In 2006 indie rockers Sonic Youth released yet another album "Rather Ripped". Sonic Youth were actually part of the commotion at the start of the independent rock underground in the 80's and 90's. Aside from "Daydream Nation" and "Experimental Jetset (which I have on blue vinyl)" this is in the bunch of amazing insane albums they have made. Sonic Youth are a band who aren't afraid to experiment with anything. Take "Goo" for example, who but Sonic Youth would make a song repeatedly saying "Hey goo whats new? woohoo!" I rest My case. Sonic Youth could be called the gods and godess (Kim) of indie rock (even in their 40s). They are currently doing a "Daydream Nation" tour.

Vinyl

To all those people discovering and rediscovering vinyl LP's... Rock On. To be specific on why I dig records, the sound is so much warmer and exciting than the CD, it's amazing how cool some of the super sized album artwork can be, and the mainstream hasn't caught on to it completely yet (Newbury Comics sells LPs). Also, most anything you can find on CD is bound to be on record. Before I get carried away I have to mention 45's. Recently I got an incredibly sick-nasty box set of EP's (45s) from UK bands like "The Fall", and "Chelsea". The whole thing is recorded by Step-Forward records in 2007. Records, vinyl, LPs, 10 inch, whatever you want to call them... Records rule.

Look What Happened...

...to Nirvana. "Slaughterhouse Records" the studio MTG is considering recording with just so happens to be responsible for recording Nirvana's very first album "Bleach" (it was released on Sub-Pop). Look how far Nirvana got. I'm not saying I don't like Nirvana's other albums (I love them) but the album Bleach is so much more pure and exciting and new and weird and not mainstream all at the same time. I've been desperately trying to get my hands on it for a while. I consider it strangely above "Nevermind" but not as good as "In Utero". In the early days nobody had any clue who Nirvana was so the got away with recording this "legendary" album for about 600 bucks in a matter of days. As mainstream as they may have or have been considered as, they were one life changing band... even today.

No Age

Here is what I call an interesting band. They're called "No Age" and they are actually decent. Here's the link from New Yorker and a brief segment of the article itself:

"Now the punk-rock phase—which was also a golden age of skateboarding, the primary recreation for L.A. punk rockers—has been reborn in an appealingly communal form, thanks in large part to a local club called The Smell, to a noisy and often brilliant duo called No Age" ©new yorker 2007

It truly is a good article and an OK band.

My Band

Just wanted to write a selfish but important second post. My band "Mind the Gap" whom I mentioned in post #1 are some serious indie rockers. We listen to everything worth listening to and have quite a few very original songs. We are considering recording soon or starting a serious label in the basement (if we can pull together a thousand bucks). We are currently self-filming a documentary.

The U.I.A

Yeah, that's been done before... anyways, the "Underground Indie Appeal (or United Institution of Anarchy)" is a newly created blog where a bunch of novice hardcore rockers can grab a life ring and not drown completely in the dreaded "Mainstream". Check in regularly for all kinds of good new and upcoming bands and media. This Blog is an extension to "MIND+THE+GAP", my band's blog. It is controlled by the same people.
